Oslo, Norway

Oslo

Norwegian capital Oslo is a clean-cut sort of a place

A perfectly prim and proper city of half a million. With polished monuments, up-for-it nightlife, and nature in very close proximity – not to mention typically fresh Scandinavian air – it’s exactly the kind of place to come to refresh the spirit and feed the soul.

Must see:
The Royal Palace is impressive enough from the outside – but venture in and it’s a different world entirely. Tours are organised every summer from the end of June.

Must eat at:
Start saving your Kroner now for Statholdergaarden. Beautifully set in a fine 18th century mansion, you can expect perfect service and flavours to match its Michelin star. It’s pricey, but worth the trip.

Must be there for:
As in many of the Nordic countries, the build-up to Christmas in Oslo is truly magical. And the Great Annual Christmas Fair, held annually in mid December at the Museum of Cultural History is no exception. Expect over 100 traditional stalls where you can buy everything from locally produced handicrafts to seasonal sweeties.

Well-travelled tips:
- Although it’s warmed by the Gulf Stream, winter in Oslo can be chilly and temperatures typically hover around freezing during the day. You’ll need to pack accordingly!
- When you’re using the T-bane – the tube system – be sure what line you’re travelling on, as many of the stations have specific entrances for certain lines.

Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Norway.
