Mykonos, Greece
Cosmopolitan party island
Mykonos is up for fun – and knows it – as heaving clubs and bars mark it out at a top spot for a hedonistic fortnight. Meanwhile, away from the bars, picturesque windmills and whitewashed roads point to an altogether different side of the island, where the gentle pace of Mediterranean life is untouched by the summer invasion.

Must see:
Take a quick trip by boat to the nearby island of Delos. With just 14 inhabitants but millennia of history, it’s one of the most significant archaeological sites in all of Greece (and a UNESCO World Heritage site to boot).
Must eat at:
Aqua Taverna in Little Venice has it all – food, views and romance, all in the mix. Go and you can expect a menu full of Italian/Mediterranean specialities including lobster risotto, steamed mussels and more.
Must be there for:
The local grape harvest meant such a lot to the locals that a feast was held in its honour. Today, that festival is centred on the Agricultural Museum every September.
Well-travelled tips:
- Main town Hora boasts not one but two ports – and they’re not exactly close together. Make sure you know whether you’re leaving from the old port or the new port, and which is which!
- A well-developed and much loved local bus network is one of the best ways to get around – it touches most corners of the island.
Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Greece.
