Manston, UK

Manston

Jump off and explore.

Perched in the north-eastern corner of Kent, Manston is the perfect jumping off point to discover the Garden of England. Just 13 miles from Canterbury, it’s ideal for exploring the whole Kentish hinterland. Stay local, however, and you’ll discover its Roman and Anglo-Saxon past – and a warm welcome at proper country pubs.

Must see:
Canterbury Cathedral is well worth the 20 minute drive from Manston on so many levels – set aside a day (you’ll need it) and lose yourself in its rich history and colourful (and sometimes grisly) tales.

Must eat at:
Take a scenic drive south into mid-Kent and head for the village of Bodsham, where you’ll find the Timber Batts pub – home to delicious cuisine with a decidedly French flavour.

Must be there for:
Manston’s record as an RAF base is well documented – so stay in the aviation spirit with the help of the Southend Air Festival in nearby Essex, every late May Bank Holiday.

Well-travelled tips:
•         For an alternative view of Canterbury, take a riverboat tour along the River Stour – there’s a jumping on point just by the high street.
•         Kent is famous for its windmills and oast houses – and there’s a fine working example at Sarre Windmill, a short drive from Canterbury.
