Ljubljana

Ljubljana a place to come, explore & relax

The key Slovenian city is, though difficult to pronounce, not at all difficult to fall in love with. Since its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Slovenia has embraced Europe to a greater extent than nearly any other new EU member, giving its capital an outward looking and cosmopolitan feel. Today, Ljubljana is a scenic little place, full of baroque architecture, castles and pretty bridges spanning its river. A place to come, explore, relax and (after a short drive) ski.

Must see:
The famous ‘Triple Bridge’ right in the heart of town, is, as the name suggests, not one bridge but three – a little multiple slice of Venice in the middle of renaissance Ljubljana.

Must eat at:
Treat yourself and head to As, not far from the Triple Bridge. If it’s as good as they say, upmarket As will have you asking for more of its trademark seafood.

Must be there for:
Who’ll have the last tango in Ljubljana? The annual Tango Festival, every April, will help decide. Held in the local cultural centre, it draws the world’s greatest tango exponents for a passionate dancing week.

Well-travelled tips:
If the walk up to Ljubljana Castle looks a little taxing, take the cute little funicular railway do the climbing for you.
If you fancy a swim and the river doesn’t look too tempting, you can put in few strokes at Water City of Atlantis, which has 14 different pools, saunas and more to choose from.

Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Slovenia.
