Figari, Corsica
Gateway to the island birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte
Corsica is today more likely to play host to visitors seeking undiscovered France than historians seeking more about Josephine. Base yourself in Figari and you’ll be getting away from it all, with a different, and slower pace of rural life on offer, but all the delights of coastal Corsica just a quick hop away.

Must See:
It’s not far to two fabulously fine and sandy beaches – Palombaggia and St.Gulia – both on the shore of a crystal blue sea. Perfect.
Must eat at:
Treat yourself to a trip to Bonifacio just to eat at Le Royal on Rue Fred Scaramoni. And when you’re there, ask for the foie gras. It’s a home-made speciality of the house.
Must be there for:
Napoleon’s birthday, on 15 August, is the cause of some celebration on the island. If you’re in Ajaccio on the day, you can expect period-style processions and plenty of fireworks.
Well-travelled tips:
Head inland just a little and you’ll come upon the town’s own vineyard – all 380 acres of it. Here, they produce delicious Vin de Corse-Figari... and it doesn’t get much more authentic (or local) than that.
Take a boat out to the marine section of the Scandolo Nature Reserve to marvel at the island’s red cliffs, some reaching 900 metres above sea level.
Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Corsica.
