A Modern City
With an inspiring past, with proud evidence of seafaring and trade all around you down by its ancient dockside. Head for the hills above to once-genteel Clifton to see where it’s really at today – where grand architecture meets downstairs clubs, funky boutiques, cool eateries and some of the South-West’s most authentic old pubs.

Must see:
Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge is a Victorian engineering marvel, particularly seen from above, as the Avon Gorge plunges away spectacularly beneath you.
Must eat at:
The Severnshed is a local institution, right on the water in the heart of the former city centre docks. It’s notable not only for its modern bistro style food, but its moving bar (it’s all done with compressed air, apparently...)
Must be there for:
Bristol’s annual International Balloon Fiesta takes place every August at Ashton Court – a colourful, dynamic and family-friendly occasion that will have you reaching for the sky.
Well-travelled tips:
One of Britain’s newest and grandest city centre shopping malls is open for business at Cabot Circus – a clean, modern and engaging shoppers’ paradise.
If you can manage the hike, take the mile (or so) walk up the hill to Clifton where you’ll be rewarded with views, pubs aplenty, the zoo and, beyond, the Downs.
