After a suitably long lunch, hit the shops and take in the Rue Sainte-Catherine from the Place de la Victoire to the Place de la Comediev. At 1.2km, it’s said to be one of the longest shopping streets in Europe.

Where to begin? Start at the top and work your way down in Bordeaux, with the help of the double-Michelin-starred restaurant at the Chateux Cordeillan-Bages in nearby Pauillac. Its famous ‘degustation’ menu runs to 25 courses...

The annual summer wine festivals are not to be missed. Held to coincide with the Bordeaux Fete Le Fleuve, you can expect the local wine expo to fill the town to bursting, with a fair degree of slurping, sniffing and spitting...
Well-travelled tips:
To watch a top-flight game of football, head for Bordeaux (aka FC Girondins) at the local stadium. You’ll find the ticket office on Place Johnstone.
If you’re not into wine and would prefer a cocktail and some hip tunes, get a move on to Shadow Lounge International on Rue Cabanac.
