Billund is a company town dedicated to small, brightly coloured plastic blocks. Lego has its worldwide headquarters here, and 90% of all the world’s Lego is made nearby. This small, perfectly kept town soon gives way to a beautiful hinterland noted for some of Europe’s most startling prehistoric finds.

Come to Billund and chances are you’ll be coming for some building fun. Lego building fun, that is. The company’s original theme park, Legoland, was opened here in 1968 and still draws millions of visitors every year. It’s open between March and October.

For sheer rustic charm, there’s little to beat the atmospheric Billund Kro, with its traditional architecture and varied menu of global classics and regional specialities.

Arty types will just love the Aarhus Festival, held annually in August and September. Expect hundreds of performances from drama and opera to dance.
Well-travelled tips:
If you’re into all things archaeological, hot foot it to the Moesgard Museum in Aarhus to see a collection of remarkable ‘bog bodies’ from Iron Age Billund and western Denmark.
