A winter city in every sense.
Slap bang in the centre of Sweden, Ostersund markets itself as the kind of place you can get up close and personal with winter (in fact, its latter-day motto is Vinterstaden, or ‘Winter City’). However, its winters are comparatively mild, local agriculture thriving and lakeshore views beautiful. In short, a perfectly civilised place to escape to, on and off the piste.

Must see:
At night, visit Arctura. Locally known as ‘the thermos’ it is in reality a 65 metre high hot water storage tank – but comes alive at night at awe-inspiring illumination.
Must eat at:
The popular Brunkullans, on Postgrand, is a fabulous place to enjoy decent grub, with a gourmet menu served in a historic environment.
Must be there for:
Ostersund comes alive in winter, and the Jamtli Christmas Market in the second week of Advent is a must-attend if you like all the traditional trappings.
Well-travelled tips:
• If you’re into modern experimental culture, take a trip to Fargfabriken which presents itself as a lab for contemporary art.
• The town’s reputation as a Nordic winter sports hub is well justified – there’s plenty to do from downhill to cross-country skiing... the island of Froson is one of the places to head.
