Enfidha, Tunisia

Enfidha

Tunisian Gateway

Fly into Enfidha’s Zine El Abidine Ben Ali International Airport and you’re far likelier to be en route to the fabulous coastal resorts of Hammamet, Sousse, Skanes, Port El Kantaoui and Monastir, rather than this bustling town of 10,000. With fine sandy beaches and plentiful watersports, there’s no shortage of reasons to come, stay and explore the whole area around Cap Bon and beyond.

Must see:
Jump on a bus and get out to see the magnificent ruins of Carthage, the Med’s ancient maritime trading hub on the Gulf of Tunis.

Must eat at:
Venture into the ancient heart of Tunis and, if you’re up for a slap-up meal rich in seafood, head straight for Chez Slah, which serves up local and international specialities with a decidedly French accent. It’s popular with the locals, too – always a good sign.

Must be there for:
Carthage hosts its very own International Jazz Festival every April, rich in eclectic crossovers, with more than hints of fascinating North African fusion.

Well-travelled tips:

  • If you’re independently-minded and on foot around Carthage, stop by the fabulous Light Bar in the Hotel Didon, sip a cocktail and relish the view.
  • If you’re out shopping for traditional fashion in Hammamet, look no further than Fella in the medina – it’s said to be where Grace Kelly, Greta Garbo and Sofia Loren all went to get beautifully kitted out.
