Frequently Asked Questions

At Manchester Airport, it’s our mission to make your journey as smooth and simple as possible. To this end, we’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions and provided a short answer to each.

We’ve tried to cover as many popular topics as possible, but if you can’t find the answer to your question then please get in touch.

Foodstuffs may be taken through security as long they comply with the current security regulations, in particular those concerning the carriage of liquids.

We have many maps of the airport to make your journey easier, these can be found on the dedicated pages for Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

Transferring between airports can be arranged directly with your airline. Alternatively you can contact us, for more information.

If you have booked separately with 2 airlines (i.e. there is no transfer agreement in place and you do not have an onward boarding card) then you will need to reclaim your baggage and check in at the relevant terminal.

• To get between Terminals 1 and 2 with ease there is a moving walkway along the Skylink which takes around 15 minutes.

• To get between Terminals 1 and 3 there is an external walkway which takes 5 minutes.

Transferring from a domestic flight to another domestic flight

On disembarking from the aircraft check the flight information screens for the gate of your onward flight. If no gate information is shown please proceed to the Terminal 3 Departure Lounge. To enter and leave the Terminal 3 Departure lounge please note that you will be required to go through a facial biometric enrolment and reconciliation process. If you don't have your boarding card you will need your confirmation of onward travel to enrol at the biometrics. If you have your boarding card for the next leg of your trip please wait in the lounge until it is time for you to board your next flight. If you do not have a boarding card for your next flight go to the customer service desk in the departure lounge where your handling agent will be able to issue you with your boarding card.

Transferring from a domestic flight to an international flight

On disembarking from the aircraft follow the signs for "Flight Transfer". If your next flight is in Terminal 3 and you do not have a boarding card, contact your airline's handling agent at the customer service desk in the departure lounge. If your next flight is from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 follow the signs for Flight Transfer T1 T2. If you do not have a boarding card for your next flight your handling agent will issue you with one at the Flight Transfer Centre. Once you have your boarding card you may proceed directly through to the Terminal 1 Departures Lounge or, if departing from Terminal 2, proceed to the bussing lounge where you will be collected by bus and transported to Terminal 2.

Transferring from an international flight to a domestic flight

On disembarking from the aircraft follow the signs for "Flight Transfer". If you are arriving at Terminal 1 proceed on foot to the Flight Transfer Centre. If you are arriving at Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 you will need to take the transfer bus over to the Flight Transfer Centre at Terminal 1. Once at the Flight Transfer Centre you will be required to go through security and border control checks. Once you have cleared these controls, follow the signs to Terminal 3 and check the flight information screens for the gate of your onward flight. If no gate information is shown please proceed to the Terminal 3 Departure Lounge. To enter and leave the Terminal 3 Departure lounge please note that you will be required to go through a facial biometric enrolment and reconciliation process. If you don't have your boarding card you will need your confirmation of onward travel to enrol at the biometrics. If you require boarding cards they will be issued either at the Flight Transfer Centre or at the gate by your airline's handling agent.

Transferring from an international flight to an international flight

On disembarking from the aircraft follow the signs for "Flight Transfer". If you are arriving at Terminal 1 proceed on foot to the Flight Transfer Centre. If you are arriving at Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 you will need to take the transfer bus over to the Flight Transfer Centre. Once at the Flight Transfer Centre you will be required to go through security checks. Once you have cleared these controls, follow the signs to the terminal of departure. Passengers for Terminal 3 international flights will be escorted by a member of MA Security staff into to Terminal 3 Departure Lounge. If you require boarding cards they will be issued either at the Flight Transfer Centre or at the gate by your airline's handling agent.

Please note:

• Duty free purchases need to be in a plastic bag sealed by the retailer that has not been tampered with.

• If the goods have been bought in the EU or onboard an EU carrier, the receipt must show they were purchased within the previous 24 hours.

• If the goods were bought from Singapore (Changi), the receipt must show the goods were purchased within the previous 24 hours.

Please note:

  • Duty free purchases need to be in a plastic bag sealed by the retailer that has not been tampered with.
  • If the goods have been bought in the EU or onboard an EU carrier, the receipt must show they were purchased within the previous 24 hours.
  • If the goods were bought from Croatia (Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Zadar or Zagreb) or Singapore (Changi), the receipt must show the goods were purchased within the previous 24 hours.

The various flight information systems at the Airport are run by the airlines' handling agents. It is up to them to ensure the correct information is available.

Passing through the scanner does not constitute a risk to health for any passenger, including those with pacemakers or internal defibrillators. As walk through metal detectors are still part of the security process please continue to alert security staff of your pacemaker, as you would normally have done.

You do not need to make any special arrangements but please be aware that if you activate the walk-through metal detectors you will be manually searched. If you are concerned about this you may request a private search area.

Alternatively, you may be asked to go through a body scanner.

If you left some property on your flight you should initially contact the airline you flew with. We have a list of airline and tour operator contact details, while further information and contact numbers for lost property services at each terminal can be found in our lost property section.

If you lost your items in Manchester Airport please call our service provider, Excess Baggage Limited, on the following numbers (open daily 8am to 8pm):

Although rare, sometimes a passenger’s baggage is not reunited with them at the airport. If this is the case you will need to contact your airline or their baggage handling company as soon as possible.

There are three terminals and all offer shops, restaurants, bars, lounges and other facilities so you can relax and enjoy your time at the airport.

Express Check-In is available across all three terminals. Beat the check-in queues and print your own boarding card by entering your passport and credit card details. 

We have a wide range of shopping and eating and drinking facilities at the airport. You can buy your last minute essentials, grab a cup of coffee, enjoy a meal before your flight or make great tax-free savings on big brands.

Smoking areas are available outside all three terminal buildings before check-in and after arrivals. They are clearly signposted. 

There is an outdoor smoking area in Terminal 1 departure lounge which is accessed from the food court and is clearly signposted.

There is an outdoor smoking area in the Terminal 2 departure lounge which is located at gate 300 and is clearly signposted.

A suitable airside (departure lounge) smoking area for Terminal 3 continues to be investigated.

Electronic Cigarettes

Please note from 1st August 2014 after careful consideration, M.A.G have decided not to allow customers or colleagues to use electronic cigarettes indoors in any of our buildings.

The delivery of your luggage is the responsibility of the airline you are travelling with (or the responsibility of their appointed handling agent).

Airline and handling agent contact details

The security regulations at Manchester Airport are enforced by the Department for Transport and we have no flexibility in their application. Sometimes these regulations can seem strange but please be assured they are there for passenger and staff safety. If you wish to discuss the regulations when you go through Security, please ask to speak to a Security Team Leader.
