Cycling Holidays

There’s no better way to explore a new place than on two wheels. Whether it’s easy peddling along the coast, or a breathless steep climb to the top of a hill, cycling offers the perfect way to take in all the sights a destination has to offer. Check out our recommendations for some of the best cycling destinations.

For mellow souls… Dordogne, France

If peddling along soft-green rolling hills takes your fancy, then head to the blissful Dordorgne. One easy yet beautiful route is from Sarlat-la-Canéda to Recamadour, via Souillac. This route will see you pass many beautiful medieval châteaux, such as Château de Rouffillac and Château du Raysse.

Spread your trip over two days so you have plenty of time to sightsee and enjoy a picnic along the meandering Dordogne river. Sarlat-la-Canéda is famed for its market where you can buy duck or goose confit, walnuts, cèpe mushrooms, fresh fruits and vegetables. From December to February, you can also enjoy the delightful foie gras and truffles at the Place Boissarie.

For the endurance endowed… Sicily, Italy

The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily is blessed with dramatic coastlines and rugged mountains. To see all it has to offer, follow the 602-km (374 miles) SIBIT Trapani-Siracusa cycling route, which takes you through salt lagoons, sand dunes, the tonnara (medieval tuna-fishing estates), the dramatic cliffs of the Scala de Turchi, and some of the island’s best beaches.

You can also visit haunting archaeological ruins, including the Valley of Temples near Agrigento and the Greek theatre of Syracuse. It’s worth considering a slight detour from the route to head inland to the beautiful baroque cities of Ragusa, Modica and Scicli, all listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

For the thrill seekers… Goa, India

Experience the thrill of cycling through the remote beauty of Goa, where you journey through a myriad of beaches, forests, and historical sites. For fantastic views of the coastline, midlands, and mountain ranges, follow the trail from Panjim on the Arabian Sea coast to the awe-inspiring sight of the Dudhsagar Waterfalls. Uncover a blend of scenic beauty, history, and culture as you ride along the Mandovi and Dudhsagar rivers. This epic journey will quickly have you craving your next cycling holiday.

For the undecided… Lanzarote, Spain

The consistently warm weather in Lanzarote makes for an excellent cycling adventure, with temperatures high enough even in winter for a dip in the Atlantic. Spiralling roads wind through a dramatic volcanic landscape, providing scenic views unlike anywhere else in Europe.

Lanzarote offers many easy and challenging routes. You can ride leisurely along the coast, or you can tackle its 180km Ironman route which covers most of the island. After that, take a swim in the ocean or give kiteboarding a try. So many choices, so little time…
