Lying on the banks of the River Garonne, Toulouse gets its nickname of La Ville Rose from the pink-hued terracotta bricks; a feature of many of the city’s buildings. The Canal du Midi connects the Garonne to the Mediterranean in the east, and provides another lovely feature of a city you can explore with holidays to Toulouse. The historical centre is a wonderful part of town to spend some time, and a great size for a stroll around. Pay a visit to 11th century Romanesque church, the Basilique Saint Sernin, and stay on the religious theme with a trip to the Daurade basilica, which began life as a temple to the Roman god Apollo, and the Couvent des Jacobins; the burial place of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The Capitole de Toulouse plays host to the Hôtel de Ville, Théâtre du Capitole and 16th century Donjon du Capitole, while the Pont-Neuf is a 16th century bridge built to traverse the Garonne. The Toulouse Cathedral meanwhile cuts an interesting figure, found next to the Square du Cardinal Jules Geraud Saliège. Toulouse is notable for its significance within the European aerospace industry, with a number of important headquarters found in town. The Cité de l’espace - City of Space - is located on the eastern fringes of the city, a theme park without rides dedicated to space travel. Airbus also offer tours of their facilities, with bookings requiring an English-speaking guide advisable in advance. With lashings of culture, including great restaurants and food markets, and festivals ranging from classical music to electronic and jazz, there’s plenty to pack in with holidays to Toulouse from Manchester.
