Croatia’s Adriatic coastline is a gorgeous concoction of azure waters, inviting beaches, dramatic mountains and pretty islands. With holidays to Split you'll be staying in the country’s second biggest city, but it still feels like a welcoming holiday destination. Split is sheltered by islands such as Brač and Šolta, so go on a boat trip and spend the day relaxing on the beach or exploring the islands. Alternatively, set sail on a longer trip if you want to see more of the beautiful coast. Whether you’re interested in history or are an avid fan of the TV series Game of Thrones, Diocletian’s Palace should be right at the top of your Split hit list. The city’s historic centre is built around the Roman palace that was constructed at the turn of the 4th century. St. Duje's cathedral was also originally built around the same time, and is one of the oldest cathedrals in the world. Some of Split’s best museums and galleries include the Galerija Meštrović and the Archaeological Museum, which has an array of interesting Roman artefacts. When you want to get away from the crowds, head to Marjan hill and climb the 174 metre peak. A great place for long walks that is popular among joggers and cyclists, you’ll have fabulous views back over Split and out across the Adriatic. When you’re ready to sit back and soak up some sun, make your way to Bačvice and lay down your towel on the beach. There’s lots of cafes at the back of the beach for a cool drink or refreshing ice cream as you enjoy your holiday.
