Residing in the state of Pennsylvania and connected to the North Atlantic Ocean by the Delaware River, holidays to Philadelphia can be a hugely rewarding experience. Often overlooked due to the presence of New York less than a hundred miles to the north and Washington, D.C. a little further to the southwest, Philadelphia - or Philly as its known to locals - makes for a great holiday destination thanks to its important historical value and great cultural appeal. Philadelphia was once the second-largest city in the British Empire after London, and in fact was the capital of the United States until 1790. The city played an instrumental role in the country’s liberation from British rule, with the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution signed at Independence Hall. The Independence National Historical Park is one of Philadelphia’s biggest draws, and here you can also see the iconic Liberty Bell. Continue a journey of discovery at one of Philadelphia’s many museums, a number of which can be found in Center City West. These include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Franklin Institute science museum. Philadelphia has a range of parks such as Fairmount Park and Clark Park in West Philadelphia that are used for arts and music festivals. The city also has five original open-space parks that were planned by William Penn back in the late 17th century - Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square, Franklin Square, Logan Square and City Hall. If you're around for the Fourth of July celebrations then you'll be in one of the most suitable places to celebrate Independence Day, while sports fans should check the calendars to see if there are any games on that tickle your fancy during your stay; there’s great diversity to be found with holidays to Philadelphia from Manchester.
