Packed with history and culture, if you like exploring then holidays to Naples are perfect for you. It’s one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world that’s surrounded by natural beauty and on the doorstep to some incredible ancient sites. Dating back thousands of years, Naples has many years’ worth of important value. There’s some incredible architecture around the city, not to mention wonderful art. Head to the Royal Palace and Naples Cathedral for some excellent examples of both, including the Chapel of San Genanaro which boasts an array of stunning frescoes and statues. If you're interested in ancient history then you'll know all about Mount Vesuvius. The volcano imposingly overlooks the city and destroyed the Roman towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii when it erupted in 79 AD. Both can be reached in under half an hour from Naples, while you can also go on a tour or visit the volcano independently. Back in the city, the Naples Archaelogical Museum with its great collection of artefacts can help you continue your voyage of discovery. The Amalfi coast is a gorgeous stretch of Italy’s charming coastline. If you're hiring a car, it’s perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace and stopping off for a coffee or bite to eat with views out over the sea. Naples itself is renowned for its food and was the birthplace of pizza. You really shouldn't leave the city without trying out a traditional thin-crust, although the Neapolitan cuisine in general’s packed with fabulous dishes to tempt you away from a pizza. Enjoy the very best of this fascinating city that is packed with charm and appeal.
