Also known as Ellan Vannin to the locals, the Isle of Man is renowned for its annual TT motorcycle extravaganza. There’s much more to discover though with holidays to Isle of Man, as you peel back the multiple layers of an island that is coloured with a number of influences. The TT, or International Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Race to give it its proper title, is a major attraction for many visitors each year, and it dominates the island around early June each year. With a history that dates back over a hundred years, the event is a mecca among those who love two-wheel racing. If you’re going in late August or early September, then you can check out the Festival of Motorcycling which features both modern and classic racing. For even more adrenaline-fueled fun on four wheels instead of two, try the Manx National Rally or the Rally Isle of Man in September. It’s not all about high speed thrills on the island, which boasts swathes of gorgeous countryside that’s perfect for hiking. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous then take on the Way of the Gull, or Raad ny Foillan, which is a footpath that stretches almost a hundred miles around the island. The Isle of Man’s rich history has been tinged by many different settlers, and you can learn more about its past with a trip to museums such as the Manx Museum in Douglas, the Grove Rural Life Museum near Ramsey, and Peel’s House of Manannan which is dedicated to the island’s Celtic, Viking and maritime heritage. Explore ancient monuments, the highest summit of Snaefell, and the result of the island’s influences on the dining scene with holidays to Isle of Man from Manchester Airport.
