Whether you're looking to explore or simply sit back and enjoy some rest and relaxation, holidays to Funchal are ideal. Start off by wandering through the old town area, which has a great array of quirky shops and museums. The 17th-century São Tiago Fort plays host to the Museum of Contemporary Art where you can see modern Portuguese work, while the Madeira Story Centre will fill you in on the island’s history. Funchal has a number of wonderful gardens that are perfect for a relaxing stroll, particularly if you're going away on a romantic break. Head to the Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro or Monte Palace Tropical Garden, where you'll find lovely views, pretty flowers and birds of paradise. Take a cable car up to Monte before heading back down the hill in a basket car, which will see you cover the 2km in around ten minutes. If you're feeling adventurous then head just over 15km outside the city to Pico Ruivo in the Ribeiro Frio Forest Park. Hike up the trail for fantastic views back down over the whole island. Pico do Arieiro is Madeira’s third highest peak, and will usually give you views back down over clouds if you ascend its 1,800m-plus heights. Whether you want to hit some golf balls at the stunning golf course, sample some local specialties at one of the city’s enticing tavernas, or sit back and enjoy a sunset boat trip from the marina, holidays to Funchal are packed with great things to do.
