Compare holidays to Faro and look forward to visiting Portugal’s southern North Atlantic coastline that seems to be perennially drenched in sunshine. The capital of the Algarve has swathes of Portuguese culture, a lovely old town and pretty marina to go hand in hand with the stunning natural beauty of the area. The allure of the region has long brought human occupation to the area, and continues to entice holidaymakers drawn by the sublime weather and delightful beaches. The lagoons and nearby beaches of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa are neighboured by the islands of Ilha de Faro and Ilha da Barreta, and contribute to the majesty of the region. Ilha da Culatra is a large sand bar that offers a greatly enriching experience but can be reached inexpensively by ferry. One of Faro’s major draws is the fabulous golf courses that can be found in the area, including Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. Both courses make wonderful use of the stunning coastal scenery to throw up unforgettable days of golfing. Other attractions in Faro district include the capital’s cathedral, the magnificent Church of São Lourenço in Almancil and the Castle of Silves. Highlights of the annual events calendar include the Feira de Santa Iria in October, August’s Festa da Sardinha in Olhos d’Agua and the Loule International Jazz Festival that takes place in the historic open-air Cerca do Convento do Espirito Santo. Delve into the local cuisine that includes deliciously fresh seafood and piri-piri chicken, shop the stalls at the daily market in Largo Mercado, or simply soak up the sunshine on the beach with holidays to Faro from Manchester Airport.
